The famed Serendipity of New York City

July 2, 2007

The word serendipity means “making happy discoveries or finding the unexpectedly pleasant by chance” while looking for something else entirely.

Serendipity 3 exterior

Serendipity 3 is in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, a few steps away  from Bloomingdale’s.
Around since the 1950s, this dessert shop is a classic  thanks to a long list of celebrity sightings, a feature in the movie Serendipity, and being listed as one of Oprah’s favorite things

They  offer a  menu of lunch and dinner items, including their famous foot long hot dogs that little  John-John Kennedy  ate as a kid. The front of the restaurant is a general store that sells books, candy, toys, mugs,  artwork and a dozen different take-home sets of world famous Frrrozen Hot Chocolate. It is New York’s first coffee house boutique.

Serendipity 3’s signature dessert is The Frrrozen Hot Chocolate that comes in Regular, Peanut Butter, Mochaccino and  Pineapple Lime flavor and is served in a oversized goblet with two straws for sharing. This velvety-smooth icy  treat is  made from  14 kinds of chocolate and exotic cocoas.

 Serendipity 3 gold icecream

The Golden Opulence Sundae, specially fashioned to commemorate their 50th Anniversary, holds the Guinness World  Record for being the most expensive icecream… $1000!! This requires a 48 hour notice. Why  is  so outrageously   expensive ? because  it’s made  of the best of the best: “5 scoops of the richest Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream infused with Madagascar vanilla and covered in 23K edible gold leaf, the sundae is drizzled with the world’s most expensive chocolate, Amedei Porceleana, and covered with chunks of rare Chuao chocolate, which is from cocoa beans harvested by the Caribbean Sea on Venezuela’s coast. The masterpiece is suffused with exotic candied fruits from Paris, gold dragets, truffles and Marzipan Cherries. It is topped with a tiny glass bowl of Grand Passion Caviar, an exclusive dessert caviar, made of salt-free American Golden caviar, known for its sparkling golden color. It’s sweetened and infused with fresh passion fruit, orange and Armagnac. The sundae is served in a baccarat Harcourt crystal goblet with an 18K gold spoon to partake in the indulgence served with a petite mother of pearl spoon and topped with a gilded sugar flower by Ron Ben-Israel.”

According to the restaurant they do sell this ultra-expensive icecream approximately one a month, so only a few people  get to indulge in such opulence. Don’t get scared away, the main courses average from $7-$18 and the sweets and sundaes $5-$17 . They never served alcoholic beverages.
